Wave crashing over lava rocks creating a waterfall

As the islands of Hawaii formed the shape and texture of the land were dependent on where the lava went, how it cooled, and how much there was. Millions of years ago when Maui was forming lava met the ocean and instantly became hard rock. Over the years of waves crashing against the rocks, it has eroded to create the series of shelves and paths for the waves to create the waterfall seen in this image.
