Basaltic Lava Flows of Hawai'i

from $19.99

Taken at: N 19.134°, W -155.502°

There are two types of lava that form from a volcanic eruption in Hawaii, pāhoehoe (paw hoey hoey) and ʻaʻā (ah ah). In this image, you can see ʻaʻā lava which means it is sharp, pointy, and would hurt to walk on. This type of lava rock is formed when lava hits the cool ocean water and violently explodes and cools leaving a rough texture. Pāhoehoe often forms when lava slowly cools into a rock from just the air temperature.

You can also observe the lighter color of the rock closer to the water, where the ocean has started to erode the lava rock. This is a great photo of two great forces meeting and it can be easy to forget how violent they can be when you see the beauty that they leave behind.

This is a scene like no other and there is no better way to display it than on metal! This will make a great addition to your home, office, or living area and serve as a great reminder from a past trip or a reminder of a future goal!
